It's a toss up. Canon has wonderful, dependable products. I love my H/P, its refurbished, like new, and does everything I want to do photographically. Look at them.

If you're looking for a digital camera, you can look here and find good specials, and get a general idea on price ranges for models, as well as search for new and used cameras in one place.

You store thousands of pictures on your SD cards? Uh... you know you can move those off to your hard drive and re-use the cards.

For DSLRs: Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony (was Minolta), Olympus. probably in that order- with N and C being too close to call.

for Digicams: Canon, Fuji, Panasonic, Sony,
Followed by: Kodak, Nikon, Casio, Olympus, Pentax

maybe I missed a couple. But- don't so much buy the brand as the camera. A cheaper Canon or Sony won't be as good as a comparably priced Fuji or Panasonic.

Digital compact cameras (compacts for short) are small and portable and you can easily take them anywhere. They are good if you are not too picky about taking artsy shots and not too picky about image quality.
Compacts perform great under daylight but when the sun goes down, their performance goes down with it. Low light is where the compacts weakness really shows.
Generally compacts will have higher noise levels than DSLRs when using high ISO setings.

Pros for compacts :
- Small, light and portable
- Very easy to use - just point and shoot.
- Cost of ownership very low.

Cons for compacts :
- Limited settings adjustment available
- Higher noise levels in pictures

DSLRs on the other hand are cameras that puts you in charge. You can manually set everything before taking a shot. They also allow you to change lenses for specific photography needs. Will certainly be bigger and bulkier and can be heavy (when attached with certain lenses).
Noise levels in images are generally low so images are cleaner looking even in high ISO settings. Performance need not go down with the sun as they are lenses designed to work well in low light.

Pros for DSLRs:
- Gives higher image quality
- Gives you all the freedom to be as creative and artistic as you like with your shots.
- Lets you change lenses for different needs without the need to change cameras.

Cons for DSLRs:
- Size is bigger and bulkier. May be a hassle to carry around.
- Has a steep learning curve to really master the camera.
- Cost of ownership can be very high (good lenses and accessories don't come cheap!)

So it's up to you what to buy. If you have a passion for photography and wants lots of control with your shots, get the DSLR. If you just want a camera to capture and keep pictures for memories, get the compacts.

Good Luck!

I have always owned Nikon's and they are amazing! I just got the D60 and it's great! I am an amateur and I have been taking pictures in the auto mode and I am very comfortable with this camera. I go to bed with the manual as reading material, but I seem to be doing just fine. I think this would be a good camera for you, but if you don't want to spend this much, check out the other Nikon's, like the S550 and the S600.

Asking for an opinion between Nikon or Canon is like asking about religion. Both sides will argue until they fall unconcious. The truth is, both Nikon and Canon make fantastic D-SLR cameras.

If you owned a Nikon film SLR in the past and still have lenses, you already have a start on a Nikon kit. Almost all Nikon "F" mount lenses made will work on current Nikon digital SLR cameras. A recent exception is the Nikon D40 and D40x - they will autofocus only with Nikon "AF-S" lenses.

Canon, on the other hand, is as equally used by professionals as Nikon. They don't have the decades of lens compatibility that Nikon does, but they do have a very developed hypersonic motor focusing system that they have used since the creation of the Canon "EF" lens mount. (Nikon uses their similar "AF-S" technology, but Canon did it first.)

Consider both brands equally and be sure to make your final decision standing in your local camera store with the cameras in your hands. Specifications and test reviews on the Web can only tell you so much. Eventually, you have to TRY the cameras and discover which one is for you.

Yes it will likely be cheaper in the US versus Japan.

The main reason in one word is "Volume". When I used to travel abroad, I used to think the same thing and quickly learned that the US buying power (volume purchases) allows us to buy products for much less and this allows us to offer them for significantly cheaper prices than most other places.

One word of caution however. I've found that US electronics only come with a US or N. American warranty. This means if something happens to your camera then you cannot get warranty service in your country and instead would have to pay for the repair.

I think it depends on where you buy it. Some places might sell it without the kit lens. I bought it in a package at a Best Buy in NC, it came with the body, kit lens, another lens, & a camera bag for $ 630 total. The camera did come packaged with the 18-55mm kit lens.

Depends on what you really want to do and what you like.
if you're looking for something small to carry around and take snapshots - a compact is fine

If you want to do artistic stuff, landscape, or for a lack of a better description on my part, "serious photography" - DSLR is the way to go.

That's not to say that the compacts can't take good images, but with the DSLR you have the advantage of manual control and the focal range.

A good compromise would be camera like the Canon G9. It's like a compact and basic DSRL combined.
